Straight answers about panel work
Every question we get asked in the field, in one place. Search it, filter it, or call us — we would rather spend five minutes on the phone than have you guess.

Getting started
Do you charge for an estimate?
No. Panel estimates are free. We come out, open the panel, look at the meter, mast and grounding, and give you a written number based on what is actually there rather than a guess over the phone.
Do you do general electrical work?
Our specialty is the panel and the service around it: replacements, amperage upgrades, fuse box conversions, subpanels and the dedicated circuits that come off them. If your project needs work outside that lane, tell us anyway and we'll point you toward a contractor we trust.
How soon can you get to my house?
Estimates are typically scheduled within a few business days. Installation timing depends on permit turnaround and utility scheduling in your jurisdiction, and we give you a realistic date at the estimate.
Do I need to be home while you work?
Someone 18 or older should be on site so we can get to the panel, confirm the outage window and walk the finished labeling with you. You do not have to watch the whole job.
Panels & sizing
How do I know whether I need a replacement or a 200-amp upgrade?
Replacement addresses failing equipment; an upgrade addresses running out of capacity. A load calculation and a look inside the enclosure separate the two, and we do both before quoting.
Can you replace a panel without increasing the amperage?
Yes. A straight replacement at the same service size is common and costs less than a full amperage upgrade.
Do you replace Federal Pacific, Zinsco and Challenger panels?
Regularly. Those are among the most common replacements we do in older Denver and Aurora homes, and we show you photos of what is behind your cover plate before quoting.
Is a 200-amp panel enough for an EV and a heat pump?
For most Denver-area homes, yes. We confirm it with a load calculation rather than a rule of thumb, and we will tell you when load management is the smarter buy.
Will my mast or service entrance cable need replacing too?
Often on older homes, because a 100-amp mast and cable are not rated for 200 amps. We check it at the estimate so it is priced in from the start rather than added later.
Will you have to open my walls?
Rarely. Most work happens at the existing panel and meter locations. If drywall or siding work is unavoidable, we tell you before we start.
What happens to my old panel?
We remove and recycle it, patch the wall opening where practical, and leave the space clean.
Do you schedule the utility disconnect?
Yes. Coordinating the disconnect and reconnect is part of the job, and we book it around the work date so you are not making that call yourself.
My insurance company says I need it replaced. How fast can you do it?
Tell us the deadline when you call. We schedule around it where permit and utility timelines allow, and we can send documentation straight to your insurer.
Do I have to rewire the whole house?
Usually no. The conversion replaces the panel and service, not the branch wiring. If we find damaged or unsafe wiring at the panel we will show you photos before doing anything about it.
Should I go to 200 amps while you are in there?
In most Denver-area homes, yes. The incremental cost during a conversion is far lower than upgrading again in a few years when you add AC or an EV charger.
How long does a fuse box conversion take?
Most conversions happen in one stretch of work, with the power off for part of the day. Homes with a deteriorated service entrance or knob-and-tube at the panel can run longer, and we say so up front.
Can you keep the fuse box location?
Usually yes. If code clearances or the utility's requirements force a move, we show you the options and the cost difference before anything is disconnected.
What if you find aluminum branch wiring?
We stop, photograph it and explain the options, including pigtailing at the panel. You will not get a surprise line item without a conversation first.
Can I add a subpanel without upgrading my main panel?
Sometimes. It depends on how much of your main service is already spoken for. The load calculation answers it, and we do that before quoting.
How big should a garage subpanel be?
Sixty amps handles most shops with 240-volt tools. If an EV charger is coming, 100 amps is usually the better buy while the trench is already open.
Do you do the trenching?
Yes. Trench, conduit, burial depth, backfill and basic restoration are part of the quote for detached runs.
Does a subpanel need its own ground rod?
A detached structure does, with the neutral and ground kept separate at the subpanel. A subpanel inside the same building does not.
How long does a subpanel install take?
An interior subpanel is typically a half to full day. Detached runs that require trenching usually take longer depending on distance and ground conditions, and we scope that at the estimate.
How deep does the trench need to be for a garage feeder?
Burial depth depends on the wiring method and whether it is under a driveway. We size the conduit and depth to code and handle backfill and basic restoration as part of the quote.
Can a subpanel power an EV charger in a detached garage?
Yes, and that is one of the most common reasons homeowners call us. Sizing the feeder at 100 amps while the trench is open costs far less than reopening it in two years.
Will a subpanel overload my main service?
Not if it is designed correctly. The load calculation tells us how much capacity is actually free, and we size the subpanel to what your service can carry.
Costs & financing
How much does a panel upgrade cost?
It depends on the service size, the condition of the meter and mast, grounding work and local permit fees. We give you one fixed written price after seeing the equipment. That price holds unless we find a concealed condition once the cover comes off, or you ask us to change the scope — either case is discussed and agreed with you in writing before we proceed.
Do you offer financing?
Yes. We offer financing through our lending partner so a panel replacement can be paid monthly instead of all at once. Checking your options typically does not affect your credit score.
When do I pay?
No deposit is required to schedule your work. Payment in full is due at completion of services, prior to the final inspection.
What is included in the written quote?
The panel and breakers, any meter or mast equipment being replaced, grounding and bonding, wire and conduit, the permit fee, inspection coordination and the warranty terms. If something can't be seen until the cover comes off, we say so in writing before you sign rather than after.
How much does panel replacement or an upgrade cost in the Denver metro?
It moves with service size, the condition of the meter and mast, grounding work and your jurisdiction's fees. We put one fixed written price in front of you after seeing the equipment, and financing is available if you would rather pay monthly.
How much does it cost to replace a fuse box with a breaker panel?
The number moves with service size, meter and mast condition, and grounding work in older homes. We quote a fixed price on site, and financing through Hearth is available if you would rather spread it out.
How much does a subpanel installation cost?
Feeder length, whether the run is trenched or interior, and the amperage set the price. We measure the run on site and put one fixed number in writing.
Who pays for this equipment, me or the utility?
In most Colorado jurisdictions the utility owns the meter and the conductors up to the point of service, and the homeowner owns the housing, mast, conduit path and everything downstream. So the equipment is on you, and we price it up front.
How much does a panel repair cost?
Far less than a replacement, which is exactly why we diagnose before quoting. You get the repair number in writing on site.
Permits & inspections
Do you pull the permit?
In most jurisdictions we serve, panel work requires a permit and inspection, and we pull it, meet the inspector and close it out. The permit fee is itemized in your written quote.
How do I know if my panel just needs an inspection?
Panel age, a panel that's completely full, a known-problem breaker brand, or a planned new load like an EV charger, heat pump, hot tub or addition are all good reasons to schedule an inspection — none of them require stopping what you're doing today.
How long does the permit and inspection process take?
Most Front Range jurisdictions typically issue residential electrical permits within a few business days, and inspections are usually scheduled within a day or two of the work being finished. Denver and Aurora run longer at busy times, and we give you the realistic date rather than the best case.
Does my HOA have to approve panel work?
Interior panel work almost never needs HOA approval. Exterior changes such as a relocated meter, a new mast or a visible conduit run sometimes do. We provide the equipment details and photos the board asks for, and we can schedule around their meeting date.
Do I need a permit to replace or upgrade a panel?
Yes, in every jurisdiction we serve, from Denver and Aurora to Erie, Morrison and Monument. We pull it, meet the inspector and close it out so it never becomes a problem at resale.
What happens if the inspector calls out a correction?
We handle it and get the permit closed. There is no extra charge for correcting our own work.
Are fuse boxes up to code in Colorado?
Existing fuse boxes are generally allowed to remain, but they cannot be expanded, and any modification triggers current code. That is why most homeowners convert when they add capacity.
Is a permit required for an EV charger circuit?
Yes, for any new or modified circuit in every jurisdiction we work in. We pull it, meet the inspector and close it out. Skipping it is the most common problem we find in other people's installs.
Do I need a permit for service entrance work?
Yes. Service work is permitted and inspected in every jurisdiction we work in, and the fees are stated in your written quote.
Does the HOA need to approve the work?
For exterior equipment on many properties, yes. We will provide the scope and equipment details you need to submit, and schedule around the approval.
The work itself
How long will my power be off?
Most single-panel replacements are back on the same day. The exact outage window depends on your service and utility coordination, so we give you the expected window after the inspection and keep you updated as the work progresses.
Do you use subcontractors?
In most cases, every crew on your property is an EPO employee. If we ever bring in outside help for a specialized task, we'll tell you before the work starts.
Will you make a mess?
We drop-cloth the work area, vacuum on the way out and haul away the old equipment. Where a wall opening is unavoidable we tell you in advance and patch what we practically can.
I already have solar. Can you still replace my panel?
Yes. We coordinate the array shutdown, keep the interconnection compliant and make sure the new busbar rating and breaker placement still work for your system size. Tell us the inverter make and system size at the estimate so it is priced in.
Safety & code
What should I do if I smell smoke or see sparks at my panel?
Leave the house and call 911. Do not go near the panel and do not try to remove the cover or shut anything off yourself. Once the fire department clears the scene, call us to evaluate the system before anything is re-energized.
How do I know if my panel needs same-day attention?
Stop using the affected circuit and call us today if you notice heat or a warm panel cover, scorched or discolored parts, buzzing or humming, moisture in or near the panel, or a breaker that trips more than once on the same circuit. Never remove the panel cover to check yourself — leave it in place and call.
Is a fuse box unsafe?
A well-maintained fuse box isn't automatically dangerous, but fuses provide no arc-fault or ground-fault protection and they invite over-fusing, which defeats the protection entirely. For a modern household we recommend conversion.
My insurance company flagged my panel. What now?
Send us the letter. We'll quote exactly what the carrier is asking for, document the work with photos and provide the permit sign-off they need.
Is 200 amps enough for my house?
For most Denver-area homes, yes — including an EV charger and a heat pump. We confirm with a code-based load calculation instead of assuming.
What happens if you find aluminum branch wiring?
We stop and show you. Aluminum branch circuits are not automatically replaced during panel work, but the terminations have to be handled correctly with rated connectors and antioxidant. We price that as a visible line item rather than discovering it mid-job.
My charger's outlet is discolored. Is that serious?
Discoloration usually means heat from a loose or undersized connection, and it should be looked at promptly. Stop using the outlet and call us.
Is a buzzing panel dangerous?
It should be looked at promptly. Buzzing can mean a loose connection or a failing breaker, both of which generate heat. Do not ignore it, and if you smell burning, leave the cover alone, shut off the main only if you can reach it safely, and call us.
EV charging
Do I need a panel upgrade to install a Level 2 charger?
Not always. It depends on your service size and how much of it your household already uses. We run a code-based load calculation before quoting, and plenty of 200-amp homes take a charger with no panel work at all.
Do you supply the charger?
We install a charger you have already bought, including dealer-supplied units, or advise on models that suit your vehicle and panel. What we are responsible for is the circuit behind it: conductor size, breaker, conduit, GFCI protection and the permit.
Can I just use a regular outlet?
A standard 120V outlet adds roughly three to five miles of range per hour. It works for very short commutes; most households want a Level 2 circuit.
Will my panel handle an EV charger?
We run a load calculation before quoting. Plenty of 100-amp homes can take a charger with the right breaker size or load management; some need a service upgrade first, and we tell you which one you are.
Why does my EV charger keep tripping the breaker?
Common causes are an undersized or overheating breaker, a loose termination, a shared circuit or a failing charger. We test the circuit under load rather than swapping parts and hoping.
Should I replace a plug-in charger with a hardwired one?
Hardwiring removes the outlet, which is the part that most often overheats on a 40-amp continuous load. If your receptacle is discolored or your charger supports it, hardwiring is the more durable setup.
Can you upgrade a 32-amp charger circuit to 48 amps?
Only if the conductors and panel capacity support it. We check wire size, breaker space and the load calculation, then tell you whether it is a breaker change or a full circuit rerun.
Can you install a charger outside or in a carport?
Yes. Outdoor installs use weather-rated equipment and proper conduit, which is routine on Front Range homes with detached garages and carports.
Can you install a charger and replace my panel at the same time?
That is the most cost-effective way to do it. One permit, one crew, one power-off window, and the circuit is designed into the new panel instead of squeezed in later.
Do you work on chargers you didn't install?
Yes. A large share of our EV work is correcting or upgrading someone else's installation.
Service equipment
Can I replace a meter socket myself?
No. The conductors inside are utility-owned and energized until the utility disconnects them. It takes a licensed contractor, a permit and a scheduled disconnect, which is what we handle.
Is a leaning mast an emergency?
If conductors are damaged, arcing, or the drop is low enough to touch, treat it as urgent and call the utility first for safety. If it is leaning but intact, it is a scheduled repair, and it should not wait a season.
Can the mast be repaired instead of replaced?
Sometimes. If the pipe is straight and the corrosion is limited to the weatherhead and flashing, re-bracing and re-heading it is a real option. We quote the honest lesser fix when it exists.
How do you know the problem is underground?
We test at the meter and the panel first. If voltage is unstable coming into the meter and the utility confirms their side is healthy, the lateral is the suspect and we trace it before quoting.
Will my yard be destroyed?
No. We open a narrow trench along the run and restore it. Where we can bore under a driveway or patio instead of cutting it, that is what we quote.
Who calls for utility locates?
We do, on every dig. It is required, it is free, and it is the difference between a routine job and a very bad day.
My meter housing was tagged. How fast can you get to it?
Utility tags come with a deadline, so tell us when you call and we will work the estimate and the disconnect around it.
Should I replace the panel at the same time?
If the panel is also aging, usually yes. One permit, one disconnect and one crew day costs far less than doing them a year apart, and we will show you the math both ways.
Will you fix the roof leak too?
We seal and flash the electrical penetration properly as part of the job. Broader roof damage around it is a roofer's work, and we will point it out with photos.
My breaker keeps tripping. Does the panel need replacing?
Usually not. A breaker that trips is often doing its job, and the fault is on the circuit rather than in the panel. We find the cause first and only talk about the panel if the panel is the problem.
Can you get breakers for my old panel?
Sometimes. For some obsolete equipment there is no listed breaker still made, and installing the wrong one is both unsafe and an insurance problem. When that is the case we will tell you plainly.
My insurer says my panel is uninsurable. Is that real?
Carriers do decline or non-renew over certain older panel types and conditions. Whether yours qualifies depends on what is in your letter and what is actually in the enclosure, and we look at both before quoting.
Will replacing the panel guarantee my policy is reinstated?
No, and anyone promising that is guessing. We correct the equipment and give you documented proof of a permitted, inspected installation. The coverage decision belongs to your carrier.
Can you work to a closing date?
Often, yes. Tell us the date up front. Permit and utility scheduling are the constraints, and we will tell you honestly whether the date is achievable.
Solar & A/C prep
Do I need a 200-amp service for solar?
Not always. It depends on your array size, your busbar rating and the interconnection method. Plenty of well-sized 200-amp panels take solar with no work at all, and some 100-amp services can with a smaller array or a supply-side connection.
Should I upgrade before or after signing a solar contract?
Before, if you can. Knowing your electrical scope up front keeps it out of the solar change-order process and lets you compare prices calmly.
Do you install solar panels?
No. We handle the panel, service and conduit preparation, and we work alongside whichever solar contractor you choose.
What is pre-piping?
Running the conduit, and often a pull string, from the panel to where the inverter or array will land, while the path is still accessible. It saves opening finished walls later.
Can you prepare for a battery too?
Yes. Batteries usually need a protected-loads subpanel and a specific interconnection arrangement, and planning that now is much cheaper than retrofitting it.
Does my HVAC contractor handle the electrical?
Some do, many subcontract it, and a few leave it to you. We are happy to be the electrical side of the project and to coordinate directly with their crew.
Will adding air conditioning require a panel upgrade?
Not always. It depends on your service size and existing loads. We run the calculation and tell you plainly, and if 100 amps genuinely will not carry it, we show you the numbers.
What is the outdoor disconnect for?
Code requires a means of shutting off power to the outdoor unit within sight of it, so a service tech can safely work on the equipment.
Can you pre-wire before I buy the equipment?
We can rough in the path and panel provision, but final circuit sizing depends on the equipment nameplate. If the model is not chosen yet, we size the rough-in conservatively and finish once it is.
Do mini-splits need their own circuits?
Usually yes, one per outdoor unit, sized to that unit. Multi-zone systems vary, so we work from the manufacturer's data.
Warranty & after the job
What warranty do you provide?
A 3-year limited workmanship warranty plus a 1-year parts and equipment warranty, with manufacturer coverage continuing on its own terms after that. Coverage stays with the service address, so it transfers to a buyer if you sell. Full details are on our warranty page, and the written warranty document states the exact terms.
Will my circuits be labeled?
Yes. Every circuit is identified and written into a legible directory, and we photograph the finished panel so you have a record.
Front Range
Who inspects panel work in Denver?
Denver Community Planning and Development handles the permit and inspection inside city limits, and Xcel Energy coordinates the service disconnect and reconnect. We schedule both and meet the inspector.
Do you work in Lakewood, Wheat Ridge and Arvada too?
Yes, along with Englewood, Edgewater, Glendale, Littleton, Centennial, Thornton and Westminster. The permit office changes by jurisdiction, and we handle whichever one applies to your address.
My house is in a historic district. Does that change anything?
It can affect where exterior equipment goes and how visible it is from the street. We plan the location during the estimate so there are no surprises at inspection.
Who permits panel work in Aurora?
The City of Aurora Building Division. We pull the permit, coordinate the utility disconnect and meet the inspector, and permit fees are itemized in your written quote.
Do you serve Centennial, Parker and Green Valley Ranch?
Yes, all three are inside our normal service area along with Southlands, Tallyn's Reach and Foxfield.
My breaker brand has been discontinued. Do I have to replace the whole panel?
Usually, and it is generally the more cost-effective path. Chasing salvaged breakers for an unsupported line can cost more and leaves you with equipment nobody stands behind.
Is my address in Boulder County or Weld County?
Erie straddles both. We confirm it from your address before scheduling and pull the permit with the correct authority.
Do you cover Louisville, Lafayette, Broomfield and Superior?
Yes, along with Dacono, Frederick and Firestone, all inside the northern end of our service area.
Will my panel support solar later?
That depends on the busbar rating and where the breaker lands, not just the amperage. Tell us solar is on the horizon and we will spec the panel so your installer can interconnect without extra service work.
Town of Monument or El Paso County for my permit?
It depends on whether the address is inside town limits. We check it before scheduling and pull the permit with the correct authority.
Do you come out to Palmer Lake, Woodmoor, Gleneagle and Larkspur?
Yes, the Tri-Lakes area and northern El Paso County are a regular part of our service area.
Can you set my panel up for a generator?
Yes. We install interlock kits and transfer-switch-ready configurations so a portable or standby generator can back-feed the house safely, rather than an improvised connection through an outlet.
Who permits panel work in Morrison and Evergreen?
Jefferson County Building Safety, or the Town of Morrison for addresses inside town limits. We confirm which applies and handle the permit and inspection either way.
Do you drive out to Conifer, Kittredge, Indian Hills and Golden?
Yes. The Bear Creek and Evergreen corridors are part of our regular service area, and Golden sits right on the way.
My house is all-electric. Does that change the panel size?
Often, yes. Electric heat is typically the largest single load in a foothills home, and a real winter load calculation is the difference between a panel that works and one that trips every January.
